Teachers Honored for High Student Achievement
Launch the media gallery 1 playerThe Confidence in Kansas Public Education Task Force has honored two St. Francis teachers and the school as a result of student performance on the Kansas eighth grade math and reading assessment tests.
Carla Schiltz and Lisa Gibson have been awarded a certificate of merit as a part of the sixth Annual Challenge Award which recognizes schools for outstanding achievement and uncommon accomplishments. The recognition is based on Kansas Assessment results from 2009 and other qualifying factors, specifically the sample size, ethnicity, and social-economic status of those taking the tests.
Math instructor Carla Schiltz has received this award the last three years. The is the first year for Lisa Gibson, reading instructor, to receive the award.
Launch the media gallery 2 playerFor each of the 14 state assessments, 60 state schools were originally identified as "high performing." A statistical model was used that included test results and percent of the sample that received free or reduced-price lunch. A sample size minimum of 20 was set. From those 60, the top score from 10 regions was selected for a certificate of merit. In all, 132 certificates were awarded with 29 buildings receiving two or more awards. They represent 64 different school districts.
Cara and Lisa will attend a recognition dinner scheduled for Thursday, November 12th, at Lakewood Middle School in Salina.
Superintendent Rob Schiltz commented, "I'm very proud of the them and their students (this year's 9th graders) for their accomplishments."
