Substate Basketball Saint Francis Wins Over Quinter and Sylvan-Lucas

By Ben Busse

During the Thursday matchup between Quinter and Saint Francis the Bulldogs came out red hot.

Adam Krien junior, said, “We are kinda used to teams coming out so hot against us by now, it seems like every team we play they play their best game of the year against us.  So we know we have to just weather the storm and play our game.”

That’s exactly what the Indians did after going down 6-0.

Jesse Baxter, junior, said “I knew we were a way better team then them we just had to get them slowed down and play our game, after we started taking longer possessions and knocking down some shots I knew we had the game in the bag.”

The Indians held the Bulldogs scoreless the whole fourth quarter.

Brady Dinkel, senior, said “Our 1-3-1 defense can really shut teams down when we run it right, after we steal a few passes up top it makes them very timid to do anything especially when they are not great ball handlers, but in the end I’m just glad that it wasn’t my last game and that we have a chance to go to state.”

The Indians ended up winning the game by 13 points and played in the substate championship on Saturday.

Once again the Indians opponents started on red hot and the Indians were down 21-3 at the end of the first quarter.

“I knew we were fine,” Dinkel said. “We just had to get back to our game and knock down some shots.”

At the end of the first half the Indians were back within five points with a score of 23-18. The Indians came out in the second half and tied the game with just three possessions.

“The second quarter and second half was super fun,” Baxter said. “We played our best basketball we have played all year in that time.”

The Indians went on to win in a 48-40 thriller and will play at the state tournament in just the third time in school history.  They will play in Dodge City on Wednesday March 11 at 3:00 p.m.
